Must IGERT proposals focus on the creation of a new degree program, or can proposals create new focus area within existing degree programs?
It is not necessary to propose a new degree program. Most IGERTs do not create new free-standing doctoral programs. Many have certificates, minors, concentrations, etc. What the NSF considers important is how the graduate students will get the transformative interdisciplinary educational framework and research opportunities they need.
