Moving from near London to the Lake District… what about work?

Hi I live in the lakes and work in IT. In terms of where to commute to from the Lake District it depends on how long you want to travel for and which part of the Lakes you will be living in. e.g Kendal is 10 minutes from the M6, Keswick is a good 1/2 hour to 45 minutes depending on traffic. If you want to work in Cumbria your choice is quite limited. There is BNFL at Sellafield, which is probably the biggest employer and has a lot of IT contractors working there. However it is a pain to get to as the roads in are not fantastic. There is a railway station at sellafied but the trains there run to Carlisle and Barrow in Furness via the coast line which is slow and stops just about everywhere there is some sign of civilisation. At Barrow in Furness, British Aerospace has a shipyard which has IT contractors working there. Barrow is a good hour from the M6 depending on traffic and is in the south west corner of Cumbria. Besides that, if your going to be in the South of the county and not too
