We have for many years assessed corporate registrations as part of our risk management and quality assurance strategy. During a survey of our membership as part of our Professional Renewal process, where we are investigating best practices for self-regulatory bodies, many members indicated that conflicts between expectations of the employer and the member’s professional obligations were an issue. In fact, the Engineers and Geoscientists Act enables the registration of companies, but does not require the registration of companies or provide enforcement authority to APEGBC. In the past, attempts to have the needed legislation put in place have given rise to strong opposition. As we do not have the legislated authority to require corporations to meet certain practice standards, we are in the process of setting up a pilot project whereby companies can voluntarily participate in an organizational risk management and quality assurance program through APEGBC.
