Money saving tips for housebuilding?
A house is going to cost a certain minimum per square foot for just the basic construction using conventional materials (like $200 to $250 a square foot). It’s when you start adding design features or custom accents that the cost really starts to go up. For example, something like a curved stairway would be a lot more expensive than a stairway with 45 or 90 degree angles. A soffit in the ceiling above the kitchen cabinets would add more cost as opposed to just having open space. Arched walkways instead of straight headers would also add more cost. So would bay windows instead of just flat windows. Or more expensive cabinets (kitchen and bathroom), granite counter and sink tops (instead of tile), custom flooring (hardwood and tile), custom lighting and plumbing fixtures, etc. These things really add up fast. To save money during construction, go with extras and fixtures that are less expensive. You can always change them out later if you want to spend the money on the custom stuff. As f
Not real familiar with your area anymore but if you have places that sell salvage items you can sometimes find some pretty good deals there. Lots of times you can get doors that may have a tiny scratch or two on them or you might find sink cabinets for the bathroom that may have a little scratch or not be finished out. Something like that you could finish yourself. They also carry all kinds and shapes of trim to. They usually have just about everything one would need to build with. You do have to look things over good because it is being sold there for a reason. I would not buy any paint there because there is a good chance it may have been frozen somewhere and ended up there for sale. I have bought light fixtures, electric boxes, plug-ins, wiring, plumbing, toilets, sinks, bathtubs and all sorts of stuff at those places for sometimes half price or less.
