Missing VAT receipt – what can we do?

I tend to agree with richard F. Never give up on the money. Failing that two alternative strategies seem obvious. Firstly, if you have acted in good faith, and can prove this (records of asking for receipt) I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Give (sorry I’m UK assume same in Ireland) IR a ring and ask. I know this sounds terrifying, but when you speak to them, generally they are reassuringly human and can give good advice. Secondly: talk to your accountant. That’s what you (over)pay him for. Personally I would make sure my business insurance covers me for a IR audit (mine does) and risk it. You have acted in good faith and are morally correct, even if not legally.
