When I was active duty, I didn’t know any other system besides hierarchical. I went to a military college, and never worked outside the military. I was so young, I was at the bottom of the totem pole in the military and in civilian life. I didn’t insist on egalitarianism in the civilian world as you mention. I did have a problem following orders of those higher in rank than me whom I didn’t respect, but I kept that to myself and did my job. They didn’t feel they needed to earn my respect since they had the rank. After I left active duty, my eyes were opened. I bumped into those in society that enforced strict society levels, but for the most part, people asked my opinion, and worried about my approval in group projects or meetings. I still serve in the reserves, and it is much more relaxed than active duty, but I still have commanders that I do not respect but they have the rank. I still keep it to myself, but I can view it as part of a bigger picture now. I don’t have a problem switch
