Might Changes in Divorce & Family Law Actually Increase Fatherless Families?
In an effort to strengthen family life and discourage fatherless families and single parent children, the Tories have vowed to make divorce more difficult to obtain. There’s no doubt that quick divorces and no fault divorce have considerably undermined any sense of commitment to marriage. But I hope the proposals won’t simply prove to be one more deterrent to marrying in the first place! SINGLE LONE PARENTS The fact that the legal dissolution of marriage almost invariably results in children being raised without fathers is an indictment on society. Because whether we like it or not, statistics clearly show that children thrive better emotionally, socially and academically, when raised by both parents. The fatherless family is, sadly, more likely to be deprived in every sense of the word. A quarter of all children in the UK are brought up in single parent families. They are three to six times more likely to experience abuse than those who live with both biological parents. US statistics
