Microphone Boost in XP MCE 2005?

0

Does anyone know how to get to the “Microphone Boost” feature in XP Media Center 2005? According to various KB articles it should be available by going through Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Voice > Voice Recording > Advanced, but on my system the Advanced button is grayed out. As a consequence, anytime I use either the built-in mic or an external mic the sound is almost drowned out by background hiss/static. The Microphone Boost feature is readily accessible in Win XP, so theoretically it should also be available in MCE 2005. My system is a fairly new ( < 6 mos.) HP Pavilion dv9005us with AMD Turion 64 X2 processors and 1 GB memory. When I contacted HP tech support their best solution was to do a full restore, which tells me they don't have a clue.
