METAL DETECTORS – Why are there so many types of searchcoils?
A. Metal Detector Searchcoils Come in all Shapes and Sizes. Understanding searchcoils can be difficult at times. There are circular metal detector coils, elliptical shaped coils and even 2-box coils. As far as size, there are small, medium and large coils. Circular Coils: Are less maneuverable, but provide slightly more depth. Up until recent advances in coil technology, mostly all coils were circular. A fair amount of metal detectors are sold with a circular coil attachment. But now you’ll see more and more detectors being sold with the elliptical coil. Elliptical Coils: Because of it’s narrow width and elongated shape, the elliptical coil is more maneuverable and surprisingly covers more ground than a circular coil. 2-Box Coils: This specialty coil is specifically designed to detect large deep targets.
