Member Cards – Debit Cards – what do all the logos and letters mean?
ATMs and retail debit card (POS) devices may display a number of logos. Here is a brief rundown of what those logos mean to you! An ATM is a bank machine or automated teller machine – including machines that dispense cash only or full function devices where you can withdraw cash, transfer funds, obtain balances or deposit. A Point of Sale (POS) device is where you use your Member Card (debit card) at a merchant to pay for purchases electronically (such as groceries or clothing). Some merchants offer cash-back options. Notice of HOAX: members may see email notices about a “PIN Reversal” which suggests that if you enter your ATM card PIN in reverse, the machine will notify police. This is absolutely false. ATM’s do not have the ability to recognize a reversed PIN entry as a duress signal. Any time you are uncomfortable at an ATM or feel you may not be safe, leave the area immediately, even if you must cancel your transaction.
