Medical Transcription Certification – Does It Lead To A Better Paying MT Job?
Medical transcription certification is not a requirement to become a transcriptionist. In fact, most MTs don’t have enough general knowledge and practical transcribing experience to pass the examination until they have worked for at least a few years in the field. In order to become a certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) , one must commit to investing money, time, and energy. This rigorous, two-part test is administered and overseen by the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists, or AAMT, the professional organization for MTs, and one to which all transcriptionists should belong in this author’s opinion. The first part of the test, a written examination, consists of 120 multiple-choice questions in the areas of medical terminology, human disease processes, anatomy and physiology, patient records, ethics, and English language grammar/usage.
