It isn’t creatine but creatinine that’s measured. Creatinine clearance is a good measure of renal function because in most people, the level in the blood is pretty well stable. It’s normally done on a 24-hour collection of urine. The volume of urine and concentration of creatinine in the urine are compared to the serum creatinine concentration. It isn’t a test about muscles at all, though muscle mass does play something of a role in the baseline numbers.
