Maybe theres some code available for generating unique ids for CORBA components, etc.?
I guess in designing a new basic algorithm of your own, there’s the question of whether to use any specific semantic info about the object, in making its guid (e.g. some use of Java object hash, creation/request timestamp etc.), or just have a mechanical cranker generating new guid’s mechanically (as in a database auto-increment column or Oracle “sequence”), completely independently of the objects they will be used for.
