You can lay your employees off temporarily without making them redundant however there are a few rules to this. You should pay them the Guaranteed Minimum Pay amount (usually called lay off pay) for any full day they are laid off (this is currently £21.50 per day). However, you only need to pay this for a total of 5 days in any three month period. You can always pay more than this, or more than the five days but this is completely at your discretion and not a statutory requirement. You also have to bear in mind that, although there is no maximum time that you can lay people off for they are allowed to claim redundancy if they are laid off for four consecutive weeks or six weeks in a 13 week period. Of course, this is up to the employee to claim. They might choose not to do so. The only other sticky point is the contract. Technically, you must pay your employees in full even if you have no work for them and tell them not to come in unless there is a clause in the contract which allows y
