May a paraprofessional provide support services to students in a speech and language program?
The special education program aide license allows a paraprofessional to assist in a speech and language program under the direct supervision of a WDPI licensed speech and language pathologist. However, a special education paraprofessional cannot be assigned to provide speech and language therapy. Student time spent with a special education paraprofessional working on review and reinforcement cannot be counted as speech and language therapy. If the IEP team determines a student needs review and reinforcement that can be provided by other licensed staff, including special education paraprofessionals, that service should be reflected elsewhere in the IEP, but not identified as speech and language therapy.
