Maxims Top 100 Most Beautiful Women: Who Determines Beauty?
The list is out and males are flocking to the newsstands. Reporters are picking it up and reporting on it showcasing the top 100 beautiful women picked by Maxim the magazine. In fact, the magazine refers to its yearly list as “The definitive list of the world’s most beautiful women.” The big news this year is that there is a new number one on the list of most beautiful women. Olivia Wilde of House fame has taken the number one spot. The surprise on the list is first lady Michelle Obama. She barely made the cut coming in at number 93. It was the first time a first lady has appeared on the list. I guess the list was not around during Jackie Kennedy’s day. All this aside, I am going to pull the feminist card out here. Are we not a little sick of Maxim determining who is beautiful or what is beautiful? What qualifications do they have? What bothers me is the message we send women.
