Martial Arts Training – Is Less Really More When Learning Martial Arts Self Defense Techniques?
Watch most athletic competitions and you will usually notice each athlete has techniques they prefer over others. Most baseball players like to hit fastballs as opposed to curve balls. Most running backs like to run the ball straight up the middle or to one side or the other. Basketball players may shoot more from the left side of the court than the right side. So to should martial arts practitioners learn a few techniques well for real life self-defense situations. Flying roundhouse kicks look really good in the dojo or in competition, but are they really effective in a street fight? Probably not. An actual self-defense scenario on the street is many times in close proximity to the attacker. There is not enough room to execute a large kicking technique. Punching, elbow, knee and possibly throwing techniques are usually more useful to a martial artist in these situations.
