MARKING DIFFICULT BODY PARTS FAQ What is the recommended procedure for marking spinal surgery?
Intraoperative and external marking is advised as there have been cases where a lumber procedure was started on a patient intended for a cervical procedure and vice versa. The exact interspace(s) to be operated on should be marked precisely using the standard intraoperative radiographic marking technique. The left/right, anterior/posterior position and the level must then be marked on the skin using the agreed marking symbols.
