Mardi Gras- What does Mardi Gras celebrate?
Mardi Gras is the celebration held the day before Lent begins, following the ancient Roman custom of merrymaking before a period of fasting. In 2001, Mardi Gras is February 27th. Mardi Gras, which means “fat Tuesday” in French, is also known as Shrove Tuesday. The name Shrove Tuesday comes from the custom of confessing one’s sins and being forgiven (or shriven) on that day.
