Many schools offer a five-year combined MA/PhD program. Why keep the MA and PhD programs separate?

Having two distinct programs allows us to offer one kind of service to students with BAs and a very different service to students with MAs. The MA program is good for those who intend to complete a Master’s degree and go on to another PhD program. It also benefits students who want an MA and are not yet sure they want a PhD. Our PhD program offers students who already have an MA; these students can complete the PhD here in three years, rather than the five years it would take at many other PhD programs.
