Many People thru history has been Mis-quoted. Can you come up with some?
Marie Antoinette, when told the people had no bread is mistranslated as having said “Then let them eat cake” which is quoted as showing what an insensitive, out-of-touch Austrian aristocrat she was (and, by implication, how thoroughly deserving of having her head chopped off in the French Revolution by the sans culottes of whom she was speaking). However, what she actually said was “Qu’ils mangent brioche”. Let them eat bread rolls. With a wider variety of European food available in British shops, we now know what a brioche is. It is no more of a luxury product than bread is. So history has been unkind to Marie Antoinette. She may well have been all the things she is accused of being, but this famously misquoted remark does not indict her of them.
