Many of my referrals now come from the sleep lab and I’m afraid I’ll anger them if I start doing HST. How can I address this?
The new HST policies are essentially creating “a wider broom” for uncovering sleep apnea at the primary care level. Sleep labs will still be essential for managing difficult OSA patients and diagnosing and treating other, more complicated sleep disorders which may be uncovered as sleep health is discussed more often. Some physicians may still opt to have patients that are diagnosed through HST go to the sleep lab for the titration study, so you will have brought in new business. If done right, this could strengthen your relationship with the sleep lab.
