To me the rise of China was because of bulk manufacturing or economies of scale along with lower labor rates which lowered down their cost of production to a great extent, even though that resulted in poor quality, huge rejection etc. but admit it the lower cost has always attracted investors from the globe despite of heavy rejection and sub standard quality initially, later the companies set up qualities standards which oblige chinese manufacture to follow those standards, but still the cost of production was low due to bulk buying bulk manufacturing.
