MR-guided focused ultrasound uses heat to destroy tissue, rather than radiation. Unlike radiation therapy, there is no maximum cumulative dose – focused ultrasound can be repeated over and over again, for instance, until a tumor is destroyed – and the effects on tissue are immediate.
