Little Women and Anne of Green Gables — Who copied who?
I take it you’re referring to the second of the “Anne” movies starring Megan Follows. Since you’ve read the “Anne” books you know that one takes some liberties with the events of “Anne of Avonlea,” “Anne of the Island” and “Anne of Windy Poplars” to condense them down into one movie. Gilbert’s actual first proposal (and Anne’s rejection of it) are quite different. Also, in the novel, Anne never publishes a book in true Josephine March fashion. It seems to me that, for whatever reason, the makers of this movie did borrow a great deal from “Little Women”. —- From “Anne of the Island” chapter XX: “Gilbert Speaks”: “Never mind Phil and the violets just now, Anne,” said Gilbert quietly, taking her hand in a clasp from which she could not free it. “There is something I want to say to you.” “Oh, don’t say it,” cried Anne, pleadingly. “Don’t — PLEASE, Gilbert.” “I must.
