There is debate, however, about whether any of those men were Christians or even religious, and if they founded the United States as a Christian nation. Micah Watson, assistant professor of political science at Union University, said the United States has never had a Christian government. “The forefathers could’ve put in explicitly Christian language in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution; that would’ve been quite common for that time, but they did not,” Watson said. According to a 2006 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 81 percent of Americans identified themselves as Christian. Almost 2 percent said they were Jewish, and 0.5 percent said they were Muslim. Those who identify as “non-affiliated” or “other” were about 15 percent, the survey said.
