Lightning fatalities have decreased over the past 30 years. Why have flash flood deaths increased?
Motorists are the most common victims of flash floods, usually because the power of moving water is easily underestimated. Water crossing a low spot in the road at a depth of only 12 inches can sweep away most cars. As the number of automobiles on our highways grows each year, so do the casualties. In addition, urbanization brings more asphalt and more runoff. Also, there continues to be construction in flood prone areas.
