LENGTH OF HOSPITAL STAY ?
Most diagnostic ERCP’s can be performed as a day case, that is you are admitted on the morning of the procedure and discharged following recovery on the same day. If, however, an abnormality is demonstrated such as a stone in the bile duct, you will require an ERCP treatment as outlined below. Under these circumstances, we routinely admit patients overnight for observation. Therefore, if your doctor thinks that there is a possibility that an ERCP treatment may be required, come prepared for an overnight stay. RISKS ? Diagnostic ERCP can result in complications, such as reactions to medication, perforation of the intestine, and bleeding. Injection on contrast dye through an endoscope can cause allergic reactions, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) and of the bile duct (cholangitis). These complications are rare, but may require urgent treatment, and even an operation. Be sure to inform us if you have any pain, fever or vomiting in the 24 hours after the ERCP. ERCP TREATMENTS SP
