At a time when universities have been progressively closing down language departments, and English has become the universal lingua franca, spoken by Sudanese refugees, Chinese businessmen, Afghan villagers and Icelandic popstars alike, opportunities to become fluent in a second language in Australian schools have diminished. But not everywhere. Across the country, in a score of schools, a small number of children are acquiring a second language through what’s called immersion education.
