LAN ethernet card AND wireless card will not connect to the internet, what hardware is broken?

It sounds as if your router or modem is bad. If possible, can you take the computer to a friends house and try it there? That would eliminate or confirm the router or modem. Also, you didn’t state whether or not the computer could connect to the internet. If so, then try the computer somewhere else. If not, then there could be an issue w/the config of the router as it connects to the modem. If you’re running cable modem, then they should ‘just work’. If DSL, you may need to configure the router for PPP (rather than TCP/IP) and put the DSL modem in passthrough mode. Heck, it could be a bad RJ-45 connecting your modem to the outside world. I don’t know if any of this helps, but good luck!

Try this: Disable the wireless internet from the device manager, and plug the ethernet cable into the computer and the router. Turn off your computer, unplug your router and your modem (if you’re modem has the router built-in, then do that.) leave them all off for at least 10 min. Plug in the modem. Let it get through it’s boot up sequence, establish connections, etc… Give it like 5 min. If you have a router, plug it’s power cord in now. Let it go through it’s boot up sequences, etc… Now, after the modem and router are done doing their thing, turn on the computer. Do an automatic repair on the network connection through vista’s network settings manager. This process usually fixes a good number of connectivity problems. If this doesn’t work, there’s something wrong with the settings in your router. Even if the modem is broken, the router should still give your computer a “good” connection.
