The first religious based colony was the Plymouth Colony, settled by Protestant dissidents. Several other colonies (New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut) were founded by dissidents from the Plymouth Colony, getting away from the repressive religious rule in that colony. Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore as a refuge for English Catholics, although all faiths could settle there. Pennsylvania was founded by Quakers but members of all faiths were welcome there also.
