Judo vs Sumo: Will a judoka(with his judo techniques) be able to lift / throw a huge sumo wrestler?
I’m sure one big enough can get it done because Judo uses human mechanism to displace weight. But if the Sumo is going to fight back, I really doubt it. Those guys are way too big and their entire practice revolves around trying to keep from getting pushed or thrown. They have a really good sense of balance.
Sumo wrestlers aren’t just fat guys, they’re trained athletes. Just like a pro football player, there’s substance under that padding. There are a lot of attributes you need to be a successful Sumo, great balance, strength, size, and speed. And these guys learn lots of techniques. As far as what these two martial arts practitioners do, they are actually similar. So I would have to say no, a judoka would not be able to throw a Sumo.
Judo Player (judoka) can surely throw a sumo wrestler. We do train often with a Gi (uniform) but many throws are easily change to be used without the gi. Harai-Goshi, Ippon Seoi-Nage, and Tai Otoshi are easily used by smaller players against bigger players. Most important, smaller players in sumo are as good and better sometime than than their larger peers.
I have to say yes. In all my years of judo, wrestling, sumo, and sombo… I have been able to consistantly throw heavier players with judo techniques. It’s all a matter of leverage. If you know how to move them right, a heavier player can actually be easier to throw. Especially a sumo player who is used to just locking up.
