Why Is Mars The Red Planet? Meteorites Friday September 5, 2003CNN.com reports that New Scientist magazine quotes Albert Yen of NASA saying that information from the Mars Pathfinder mission points to meteorites as the culprit, not water as widely believed. The magazine went on to say, “”If that’s the case, Mars might not have been so wet after all.” As we previously reported, data from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft potentially contradicts what scientists had hoped to prove: the past existence of large bodies of liquid water on Mars, such as oceans.
