John lennon is one of my idols, was he a bad person?

John Lennon was one of the greatest, most creative and inspirational musical geniuses of our time. John Lennon was a social activist who fought for change. He was not the enemy of God any more than anybody else. His views were not Satanic, but secularist. Unlike Harrison, Lennon had little faith in supernaturalism. His song “Imagine” is Lennon’s ideology in a nutshell. His faith was humanism, and as a social activist for change in the USA and in Europe he was unmatched. As a musical genius with a strange parallel with the composer Franz Schubert [notice the uncanny resemblance] his like may not appear again for 100 years. His comment that the Beetles were more “popular than Jesus Christ” was a statement not meant to disparage Jesus, but to say what he felt was true at the time. It was a statement for which he publicly apologized and the furious attacks on John Lennon by deranged fundamentalists was totally uncalled for. You’d have thought John Lennon and Yoko Ono were the leaders of so

He, just like any one of us, was a person with a fallen and sinful human nature. I have read quite a bit about him, and the Beatles, like any other fan. He had his moments. As far as his statement about being more famous than Jesus, while he said it, you need to understand the context in which he said it…. When a group would come into a city, they would check out anything else that was going on, to sort of “size up” how they thought they might do as far as drawing an audience. When they saw that an evangelist was in town the same time, they figured they wouldn’t get too many people. It surprised them to see they outdrew the evangelist, which led to Lennon’s comment. As he said later, he never meant it as a lousy anti-religious thing.

It is uttlery ridiculous that this old nonsense just won’t go away. Lennon was simply pointing out that to a lot of people (a whole lot of people) the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ (meaning religion). The comments were taken completely out of context and a lot religious nuts who evidenced a remarkable lack of understanding concerning their own professed faith burned Beatl albums. Oddly enough the burnings and boycots had little effect on their album sales. Lennon stood for peace, love and the decent treatment of all human beings for most of his life. If only the Christian church would do the same!

I could tick off a long list of Xians who are more evil than John Lennon ever was (Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Oral Roberts, Richard Roberts, Benny Hinn, James Kennedy, Adolph Hitler, Paul Hill, Eric Rudolph, and Judge Roy Moore would have to be on my short list) but one person’s hero is another person’s villain. Lennon was just stating a fact when he said that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus and one thing that Xians really hate is facts so these people who are commanded to love one another really, really hate John Lennon. John’s time in the universe is over and he only lives through his songs now. Enjoy them during the brief time that you have on earth.

He was an atheist, so no, he was not satanic. He did say that they (the Beatles) were more famous than Jesus. It was an off the cuff, joking remark that was not meant to be taken seriously. Too many idiots did though. As a person, I never met the guy. What I have heard is that he was not the nicest of people, but not a particularly bad person. In short he was a human who had a remarkable talent at writing music and lyrics, who was lucky enough to meet others with a similar love and talent. The name of Jesus has been around a long time. Will the names of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Ringo be as well known? I do not know and I do not particularly care. I did not realize that life or talent depended on popularity. It is enough for me that I really enjoy their music. He’s dead. The closest you are going to get is to meet Julian, Sean, Cynthia or Yoko. Or visit his grave.
