Ive recently installed a router / firewall / gateway and Ive noticed that the motion video is “sluggish”. Does the router act as a restriction to the data being passed?
While the router does insert another “hop” in the route data travels, the perceived speed reduction is not realized if the router is configured properly. This configuration pertains to the size of each packet of data that is sent. Check the configuration menus of your router to see if the manufacturer allows you to set the “MTU” size. For most DSL connections the MTU should be set to 1492. For cable modems the MTU should be set to 1500. It’s not uncommon for some router manufacturers to have this vale set to 576 which was originally used with dial up 56K modems. Tweaking this parameter may also produce an increase in your overall download speed.
