I’ve read about “detox” diets recently for weight loss – can you explain how they work?
“Detox” is short for “detoxification” and as the name suggests, it’s the process by which ‘toxins’ (alcohol, caffeine, food additives etc) are removed by the body. These are restrictive diets, not intended for long-term use. People lose weight only because they restrict calories. There’s no evidence that restricting food intake in this way will make a person healthier, or detoxify the body.
