In the late 70’s, when the Maxi-Trackball was first put into production for Atari Football, the machines had “glossy” trak-balls. Over time, the luster of the ball would fade and leave a matte/satin finish in its place. New balls have not been available for many, many years, so most people believe the original balls were not glossy. Of course, this isn’t true. So, yes, brand new trak-balls are supposed to be glossy.
