It depends. For some countries you can simply convert your licence to a UK one, all those inside of the EU for example. Those a little further away would usually have to take the practicle exam. If you have an automatic licence from your home country, then you can only drive automatics over here. If you have an automatic licence and want to drive a manual, then you have to take the exam.
