The most likely problem is that QuickTime is not configured to play mp3 files. You can fix this by reinstalling QuickTime. In one of the installation dialogs there is a button that has the word MIME. Click that button and then be sure the box for MP3 files is CHECKED. Go on to complete the installation. This should fix the problem.
