Ive inherited my grandmothers diamond engagement ring. Can I change the setting from yellow gold to platinum without reducing the value of the ring?
I would think that changing to platinum would increase the value of the ring because platinum is more valuable than gold and that is the part of the ring that really has value. Because of the practices of a certain monopoly that I have already railed on enough, the diamond itself really has little value as anything but a keepsake or family heirloom. Thus the ring’s monetary value lies in the metal from which it is made. (This is of course not taking into account the possibility that your grandmother was someone famous. If that is the case then then the ring would have value as a collector’s item simply because it was owned by her.
