Actually, the current term is Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID. The term “Multiple Personality Disorder” was used before the term was changed for the update of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR). However, both terms are currently used among survivors with this diagnosis. DID is a common manifestation of extreme trauma. Similar to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), in which one must have suffered some type of trauma to have Post-traumatic Stress, DID only occurs under extreme trauma and stress during childhood before one’s personality is established. For example, a child who has suffered severe sexual and physical abuse may develop DID due to the trauma inflicted. The child has a limited understanding of the world around him/her. Due to this limitation, as well as the physical limitations of an undeveloped brain, the child cannot comprehend what is happening to him/her.
