Totally false. Each man carried 200 rounds. In the normal Army tradition the rifles were not loaded while the landing was taking place and the troops had been told not to indulge in rifle fire until dawn. Both of those practices make sense. The first prevents accidental discharge while clambering over the side of a boat into a pinnace and the second because firing blind at night time reveals your position without damaging the enemy. Keep in mind that it was planned as a “surprise attack”.
