A. Some people have developed West Nile virus after receiving a transplanted organ or blood products from an infected donor. Since 2003, blood donor agencies such as the American Red Cross have screened people for West Nile virus after blood donation and before blood transfusions. Unfortunately, there is currently no federally mandated law requiring that donated organs get screened for West Nile virus.
