The National Eye Institute Age-related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that a combination of antioxidants and zinc could slow the progression of the disease and vision loss in people with intermediate AMD. The supplement, is marketed under many labels, including Bausch & Lomb Ocuvite PreserVision and I-Caps. Many other brands now include the AREDS formula: betacarotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper. Other ingredients may also be helpful, including lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids. A new clinical trial, AREDS-2, is just getting started to study these ingredients. Ask your doctor if these vitamins are appropriate for you. You can read the complete report at AREDS.
