I’ve heard that PowerBuilder is being put inside the Visual Studio shell. Does this mean that PowerBuilder will now be just another plug-in for Visual Studio?
No! The new WPF IDE in PowerBuilder 12 is built on top of the Visual Studio shell, so Visual Studio is actually inside of PowerBuilder, not the other way around. This means that Sybase can leverage the rich functionality that developers demand in an IDE without having to re-invent the wheel. Sybase engineering has “free” access to rich debugging, auto scripting, and other core functionality that is expected in an IDE today, and can instead focus its resources on enhancing our differentiating technology, such as the DataWindow, and continue to make .NET development easier for PowerBuilder users. Furthermore, Sybase is the first major vendor to build a development environment on the Visual Studio Isolated Shell and has worked with Microsoft engineering to ensure that the hybrid is successful.
