Ive heard that if the parcel tax passes, charter schools won get as much per child as the districts regular schools do. Why is that?
As far as we know, AUSD is one of only a very few districts in the state to include charter schools in its parcel taxes. The fact that AUSD is allocating a portion of the parcel tax to charter schools is a sign of its interest in helping charter schools succeed — not a sign the district is discriminating against them. The reason charter schools are getting slightly less than the district’s regular schools, however, is that charter schools (a) receive different funding from the state and are allowed more flexibility in how they spend that money than regular schools; and (b) have lower overhead than regular schools, because, for instance, AUSD pays their facilities costs.
