We have worked hard to ensure that these factors are taken into consideration and are confident that our figures, in line with those published by the Welsh Assembly Government, provide a sustained basis for planning in years to come. In line with the Wales Audit Office recommendations we have factored in an overall safety margin of around 10% surplus. The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and Estyn are insistent that all Councils make progress in removing surplus places. WAG has made it clear to Councils that failure to do so may result in future provision of capital funding for school improvements being reduced. Whilst the council is mindful that the population could grow again in the longer term, there is an immediate and long standing problem that needs to be addressed.
