I’ve heard that babies are born with reflexes – what does this mean?
Babies are born with some instinctive ways of reacting to things, called primitive reflexes. They include: • The sucking reflex – triggers your baby to start sucking strongly on anything that’s put in his mouth. • The grasping reflex – if you put a finger on the inside of your baby’s hand, he’ll grab tightly onto it. • The startle response – called the Moro reflex which makes your baby suddenly throw his arms out to the side if he’s startled by a loud noise, bright light or sudden movement. All these reflexes will gradually disappear as your little one grows.
