Well, as far as I’ve been able to make out it is all due to the high amount of beta-carotene in carrots. The liver of the guinea pig converts beta-carotene from the carrots (and other beta-carotene rich foods) into Vitamin A, but if there is already a lot of beta-carotene in their system they could overload – which could eventually cause liver problems (or even failure) due to all the excess Vitamin A. I personally feed my pig’s carrots a few times a week and try and vary all the veggies I give them – as in humans, it’s not good to eat the same thing all the time & variety is the spice of life !! Incidentally, I’ve never actually heard of a pig that has suffered from this problem.
