Ive heard of augmentation in people suffering from RLS. What is augmentation and should I be worried?
The primary, or first-line treatment for RLS are dopaminergic agents such as L-Dopa. Augmentation occurs when a tolerance to such medications is built up over time, resulting in an atypical presentation of Restless Leg symptoms; usually worsening symptoms that manifest earlier in the day rather than at night. Augmentation is so prevalent with such treatments, in fact, studies indicate that nearly 32% of all patients treated with dopaminergic agents will develop augmentation. Augmentation and tolerance are more common in persons receiving extended pramipexole treatments for RLS. Again, consult with your physician if you are currently on any of the aforementioned medications. Because of the risk for developing augmentation is high, nutritional supplementation may be an alternative or supportive therapy that can limit the severity of your condition.
